Nolan's first two weeks

Sunday April 22, 2012 4:04pm

Today is the most beautiful day of 2012 so far. I woke up at my usual weekend sleep-in time of 7:52am. I had slept most of the night on the floor of the living room cuddled up next to the dogs. While Lesley and Nolan slept, I snuck out to take the dogs on a long walk around the neighborhood. It was such a peaceful morning. Lola and Ollie were in heaven while they sniffed every possible tree and fire hydrant. I came back home, changed Nolan’s diaper and watched some Stanley Cup playoffs between the Pitsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers. It was a good game. It was nice to relax as the sun and warm breeze came in through the windows and open sliding door. I read some of the Lesley’s book about taking care of newborns. It is called something like the “baby whisperer.” I read about the right way of establishing sleep patterns. It is going to require discipline of Lesley and I.

Nolan has been a good little boy. He eats and sleeps a lot. There is an occasional pee fountain. All I have to say about that is he has range. He seems to only do it to Lesley, knock on wood. Lesley struggles to get sleep—maybe an hour or two at a time if she’s lucky. Maybe when she starts pumping, I can be more help with feeding. Lesley is such a cute and loving mommy. It’s awesome to see her doing so well. Hopefully she can leave the baby with me long enough to get out and pamper herself (no pun intended).

Work has been going good for me. Some short days, an evening case, and a Saturday surgeon’s conference at the beautiful Suncadia resort.

I haven’t started any new projects recently. I have been collecting some leftover building materials from the new houses they are building around us. I hope to build a shed in my backyard for next to nothing. I have other projects planned for the house after I receive Lesley’s stamp of approval. Mainly I have been focused on making my lawn pretty by killing the moss, thatching the dead grass, and fertilizing. I love being outside and working in the yard. It makes me happy to take care of this tiny little piece of God’s green earth that I’ve purchased (AKA…renting from the government). HaHa.

Anyway, while I was cruising home from church this afternoon, I had a beautifully random experience of feeling God’s love. It is almost like he was checking in to tell me that he loves me and my growing family, and that he is here for us. These extremely overwhelming feelings come sporadically, usually as I’m driving alone in my car while deep in thought. The feeling is strong enough that I nearly need to pull over because a strange watery substance begins to well up in my eyeballs and makes it hard to see. I’m grateful for random experiences like this. Because of them, I know that I am a child of God and that He is real. He’s deeply involved in the details of my life and everybody else’s.

I better get some pics up on the blog.

Much love,

Parker

Nolan's first bath!

Make sure your speakers are turned up. I guess Lesley has proof that I do snore....Dang it!

Welcome Nolan!!!

Lesley and I are excited to announce the birth of Nolan Parker Sadler. He was born on Thursday April 5th, 2012 at 7:03pm. He weighed 6 lbs 12 oz and was 19" long.

It was a beautiful Thursday. The weather was partly sunny and 48 degrees. The day started off normally. Lesley and I got ready, let the dogs out, and went to work. Lesley went to her weekly check up in the morning, which happened to be the day after her due date. I was working in Federal Way when I received the call from Lesley giving me an update on her doctors appointment. She had dilated to 4 cm and her doc gave the option of either being induced yesterday or waiting till the following Monday. Lesley jumped on the chance to do it as soon as possible. I was excited to have her induced yesterday because the anticipation of meeting our son for the first time was killing me. I wrapped up the case I was in and ran down to Tacoma General (TG) Hospital to be with her. Luckily I had my cameras in the trunk of my car so I wouldn't miss a second. I arrived to see her propped up in bed wearing her gown as the nurse was going through the checklist of health history questions. We could hear the baby's heart rate beating rapidly in the background as we waited for her to be induced. Lesley and I watched some HGTV (home improvement shows....which I love) while we waited for her doctor.

The Pitocin was administered at 11:30am. Dr. Nelson arrived at 11:40 and broke the water. At 12:20pm Lesley was sitting on the big pregnancy ball hoping that gravity would work its magic and lower the baby into position. The contractions started coming very frequently and pretty intensely so they backed off the Pitocin a little bit. The contractions really changed her demeanor as she would put her head down to fight the pain. I made the mistake of snapping a picture at this time and was nearly thrown out of the room by Lesley :). Sensing this was a good time to grab some lunch before delivery, I went to the cafeteria. When I returned at 2:45, she was lying in bed preparing for her epidural. The anesthesiologist got her set up without a problem.

The contractions became consistent enough to start pushing at 6pm. Lesley was super calm and collected throughout the pushing process. She was very strong. I never imagined that childbirth could be that calm and quiet. Within 30 minutes of pushing, I could see the top of the baby's head. At 6:42, her doctor was called in and quickly delivered the baby. The baby was immediately given to Lesley and they bonded over skin-to-skin time.

Somehow I managed to fight back the tears of the overwhelming love I was feeling for the baby and Lesley. The feeling of instantaneous love is indescribable. He cried for maybe five to ten seconds after emerging, and that's it. The baby was so calm and seemed to be keenly aware of his surroundings. His big dark eyes looked around at Lesley and everybody else in the room. His hair was a light brown/blonde color. He has big hands and feet. Many people say he has a lot of my facial features and Lesley's eyes. He has the cutest dimples. He is a beautifully handsome little baby. :)

I cut his cord. He was measured, weighed and had his foot prints taken without even a whimper. He enjoyed stretching naked underneath the heat lamp. Finally I was able to hold him and give him lots of kisses.

When all of the hustle and bustle ended, we had some alone time with the baby. We knew it was time to decide on a name for him. Nolan was one of Lesley's top names that I liked, and it fit him exactly.

We were taken to a small room that would be our home for the next couple days. I was not prepared for all of the foot traffic coming in and out of the room. The nurses checked on Lesley and Nolan every couple hours. On top of that, Lesley was trying to get him to latch on and start feeding. Long story short, Lesley barely got any sleep. I got about 3.5 hours. The parade of 100,000 people through our room today has kept Lesley from sleeping even more. I can't wait to get home tomorrow to have some peace and quiet, and Lesley can attempt to catch up on some sleep. I think Lola and Ollie are going to love him. I joke that Nolan will be raised up by our wild dogs like Mowgli on the Jungle Book.

Overall, it has been an exciting, nervous, calming, and spiritual experience. I'm not sure that the reality of it all has caught up to me. Lesley is going to be an amazing mommy full of fun and adventure.

I could only post these few pictures I took on my cell phone because Lesley's hard drive is full and I can't download the pics from my bigger camera. So you'll just have to wait tomorrow. I'll also try to post some video.

Love,

Parker

Still waiting for the baby

Sunday April 1, 2012

Still no baby yet!!!! Waiting….and more waiting. It reminds me of the feeling when your airplane is landing. You are anticipating touching the ground but it doesn’t happen right when you want it to. I’m so excited to have a son! We don’t have a name picked out for him yet. We have many ideas and will probably decide after the birth and we see him for the first time.

Lesley is due on April 4th. She is ready to have the baby out of her. She is tired and uncomfortable. I don’t know how she has managed to work full time in such a physically demanding job working with some of Tacoma’s finest obese patients weighing upwards 400 lbs.

Lesley usually falls asleep right after dinner. So I’ve kept busy with my projects. I have recently finished my bookcase/file cabinet/printer drawer. I also added board and batten to the downstairs powder bathroom.

My work has been going really well. We are a little slow right now. We have been calling on new docs. I went to Ohio a couple of weeks ago for some sales training with one of our main product lines. The training lasted a day and a half. The training was south of Cleveland. I spent an extra day out there visiting historic Kirtland and the temple. I was able to see the Johnson farm in Hiram, OH. These locations have so much church history. It was the place of the first temple in this dispensation. The Savior of the world revealed himself on at least four occasions. It was amazing to stand in these places. Truly it is sacred ground and you can feel it. It was saddening to stand in the room where Joseph Smith was sleeping and dragged out and tarred and feathered. The Kirtland Temple was an amazing experience. It was one of the many rewards for extreme sacrifice of the early saints.

I was also able to visit some of the Amish country. A friend told me a couple places I had to go. I went and got some yummy food at a local restaurant and had to take some pics at the Walmart. It was a foggy morning and people were flying through the intersections on their horse and buggies. It has got to be scary sharing the road with cars.

I’m glad I’ve had some shorter workdays so I can finish the bathroom before the birth. I’m also excited for summer. I have been outside (when it’s not raining) pruning the trees and shaping the bushes. I was able to mow and fertilize the lawn last night after priesthood session.

Lesley and I have made some friends in the ward that we will spend time with on weekends. We went to dinner and bowling a couple weeks ago. Lesley, pulled something in her leg and was crippled for a couple days after that.

Watching General Conference has been excellent. All of the talks have been great and full of direction and reminders. Hopefully I can put many things into practice and be a better person and example.

Anyway, I better run, I rented TinTin from Redbox and need to hurry and watch it before the next session of GC comes on.

Much Love,

Parker

Sunday January 29, 2012

So, not much exciting has happened since the last update. Work is going really good. It is a little slower than last month. Lesley's work is going good. Luckily she is feeling good enough that she can work full days. The baby is getting bigger and kicking harder. My favorite thing in the world is feeling her belly and watching it move. I can't wait to meet our little boy in person and hold him. I feel so connected to him even though he is still in the belly. He reacts to my touch and my voice. I can begin to feel the joy of becoming a dad. We still haven't figured out a name for him. Lesley thinks she has narrowed it down to a few. I like most of them. :)

A couple weeks ago we had a huge snow storm which shut everything down for a few days. Over two days, we got 8 inches where we live. After it snowed, there was freezing rain. Our dogs could stand on top of the snow without falling through. The heavy snow and ice caused a ton of trees to fall on homes, highways, and power lines. Almost 350,000 people were without power for 5+ days. It was a mess. Luckily we still had power and cars that could make it through the weather.

Well, that's about it. Sorry about not having any pictures!

Peace,

Parker

Bring on 2012

Happy New Year!

2012 rang in very ordinary. It was a pretty low key fiesta. The Miles' stopped by, we ate some carry-out Thai food, watched a movie (which I surprisingly didn't fall asleep in), and watched poor Dick Clark count down to the new year. New Years eve morning was spent at missionary coordination and I went and played football with a bunch of guys from the ward and surrounding areas. I shouldn't have went to play because both Lesley and I have bad colds. Now I still have my cold, and a very sore body. We didn't make it the whole way through church today because of a major booger blockage in my face and course sandpaper in my throat. Hopefully our energy comes back and we are 100% tomorrow. Luckily we both don't have to work.

Anyway, Christmas went really well, aside from being the off-year for my family. Lesley's family came in from CA, UT, and Hong Kong. It was fun to see everybody and their fun and growing kids. Santa brought spoiled Lesley a new surfboard. Yes, the 6-month pregnant lady wanted a surfboard. What momma wants, momma gets. If she doesn't ride it, I will help her break it in....or it will be a really expensive wall decoration.

(Pip in his sweater thong)

Ginger excited for her new toys! Adorable!

Lola: "seriously!?!"

Santa brought me a lot of cool stuff. My favorite was a Kregg Jig. It is a pocket hole jig so I can build stuff out of wood. I think I found my new hobby. I hope to build some cool projects. My first attempt at woodworking is an antique work bench for our home. It will go at the top of our stairs to fill some empty space and possibly be a place to put some pictures and to store some baby toys. The workbench took a couple nights after work. It was so much fun. It is all sanded and ready to be stained and assembled. Here is a pic of the bench dry fit and unsanded. It is one sturdy and heavy mo-fo. Lesley had doubts that I could do it, but is now excited to have it in the house. Plus she's also excited to get her parking spot in the garage back (at least for a couple days till I find a new project).

(I got the free plans from http://ana-white.com/. I'm probably the only dude to visit the website, but it is awesome!)

I look forward to a new year. Our little boy will be born around April 4th. We are growing excited and nervous at the same time. I was telling Lesley today as I rubbed her belly that it feels like I'm holding on to a present that I can't open for 9 months. Lesley said we will have our hands full if our boy was anything like me as a child. If this is true, he will spend lots of time in his room kicking holes in his door and filling it with marbles while screaming "this isn't fair, it was Sara's fault". Maybe I'll build a little "time-out" bench that I saw online. Crisis averted.

(As of today)

Lesley's belly is big. She is getting more and more uncomfortable every day. She has a hard time sleeping. Our bed is filled with 20 gazillion pillows to support every part of her body. I am still lucky to have the 1.5 foot strip of our king size bed. Since she wakes up 18 times per night, she wakes me up each time to tell me to roll over and stop snoring. Thus my sleep has been horrible lately. I'll probably be cuddling the dogs soon in the extra bedroom.

Well, I better run. I need to activate my xbox live account so I can battle Chanse online in MW3.
